Designed for students interested in developing a functional use of Spanish for the professions (business, education, law, medicine, social work, etc.), from a Hispanic cultural perspective. Students will have an opportunity to practice and develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. The Spanish-speaking world will provide the cultural context, and the area of business the content area.
In the The Spanish for the Professions class, we were taught how to connect with clients, customers and patients in a variety of work environments; by acquiring professional language skills and also, by gaining knowledge of a different culture’s traditions, values and practices. We enhanced our understanding of particular technical vocabulary and terminology pertaining to the professional world of business. In particular, methods used in international business were presented to us, and we had to reflect our learning of these concepts through demonstrating oral presentations; (MLO 1), written tests, or homework assignments. We learned how to familiarize ourselves with the information we gained in class and apply it to real life situations such as constructing a resume, doing an interview, participating in group meetings, business transactions involving money or credit, advertisement, job applications, etc. I found this class to be very useful for learning how to prepare oneself for the workforce and real world experiences. In addition, we learned the value of obtaining work experience and job skills. I have provided a sample of my work in class. I intend to use this expand my learning process of Spanish for the professions by collaborating with business skills and eventually work for a major corporation or organizations with branches in Latin America, Mexico, or possibly Europe. I want to learn how to deal with possible future clients, supervisors and co-workers in the workplace. I would like to eventually learn about the possible obstacles I may face in the Spanish speaking world. How to overcome those challenges and still be able to provide exceptional service. I have provided 2 samples of my work demonstrating what I have learned and my progress towards achieving my goals.
